1 Day Shimba Hills


The Shimba hills national Reserve, 30km South of Mombasa is an area of rainforest, wood land and grassland and an important area for plant biodiversity. More than 50percent of the rare plants in Kenya can be found in the zone.
The ecosystem holds one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa.It is an important bird’s area and is endowed with forest birdlife while the grasslands hold localized species such as red-necked-spurfowl, Croaking Cisticola and Zanzibar Red Bishop. The tropical forests for Shimbahills is a unique habitat for elephants of the Kenyan coast. The best place to spot them is in the Elephant hill or along the forested area such as Longo Forest, but herds can be seen all over the park.
The last breeding herd of indigenous Sable Antelopes in Kenya is also domiciled in the reserve.
A highlight is the famous Sheldrick water falls where one can walk down to the refreshing pool.
The Shimba Hills have view points which offer splendid views of the hilly and forested countryside and far as the Indian Ocean and Chale Island. To the East and the Tsavo plains and Taita hills to the West. The Climate and the tropical vegetation of the rainforest offer areal “Jungle Feeling”
In the middle of the rain forest, right next to a water hole, you will find the Shimba Hills lodge, the only tree lodge in the Coast. The huge veranda overlooking the waterhole invites to observe animals coming along” Being back to Earth” especially when the sun goes down the voices of the rainforest awake and perform their natural concert. Latest at this point you will feel the “Breath of life”

You will be picked from your hotel at around 6.00 am to start your Kenya Safari and drive to Shimba Hills, a distance of 35 kms from Diani arriving at the gate at around 6.30 am. Begin a game drive visiting Sheldrick Waterfalls at 11.00 am escorted by a game ranger.

Shimba Hills is a tropical rain forest which covers an area of 202 km2. Physical attractions include casuarinas forests, Marere Dam (a water hole where come to drink water), Sheldrick Waterfalls. The landscape is grassland. Animals seen in this area include elephants, bufalos, giraffes, impalas, heeartbeasts, rare leopards, black and white monkeys, attractive sable antelopes, and roan antelopes among others. Shimba Hills has different species of birds like (tropical guinea fowls, fish eagles, falcons and weaver birds, ground horny bills among others.

Drive back to Shimba Lodge for lunch (One of the tree top hotels at the coast region where you have a chance to see animals at the water hole) After lunch head on for another game drive till 3.00 pm where you will check out from Shimba Hills and drive back to the hotel arriving at around 4.00 pm, marking the end of your Kenya Safari.

111bird species recorded of which 22 are coastal endemics. Look out fort he African Eagle, African Hawk, Falcon, Cuckoo, Guinea-fowl, Kenya Crested, Honey guide, Greater Hornbill, Quails and sunbirds.
